Gummy smiles treatment

Gummy Smiles Treatment

A beautiful smile is a combination of esthetics and perception. Although it varies from person to person, a smile is usually perceived as ‘gummy’ when the gum tissue shows too much, or is over-prominent in comparison with the size of the teeth.

Gummy smile treatment is a procedure that helps patients who feel self-conscious because of their gummy smile, to smile back with confidence.

What is gummy smile treatment?

  • There are two treatment options for gummy smiles: the surgical and non-surgical method. Gum treatments aim to control and stop gum disease.
  • Treatment can be short-term, or can last for years.

What is involved?

Initial consultation

Our gum specialist/periodontists will find out the details of your medical and dental history, go through a consultation and examination, and take a digital X-ray of your teeth to provide a thorough and detailed diagnosis, confirm if you are a candidate for gummy smile treatment. Thereafter our dentists will discuss with you to recommend the most appropriate solution for your needs.

• Treatment

  • Surgical Method

Crown lengthening is procedure which adjusts excessive gum tissue and the underlying bone to expose the tooth’s surface more. In certain cases, crown lengthening may be follwed with crowns or veneers to achieve the ideal proportion of teeth to gums, also teeth shape and color.

Gummy smiles caused by a prominent upper jaw, excessive vertical growth of upper jaw bone (vertical maxillary excess), or prominent positioning of one’s upper front teeth may require braces, crowns or jaw surgeries. There are also cases where lip surgeries may be required.

  • Non-Surgical Method

Another cause of gummy smiles is hyperactive lip muscles. These hyperactive lip muscles cause the upper lip to rise higher than normal when smiling, showing more gum. In such cases, 10-minutes procedure consisting of a few tiny BOTOX® injections can be used.

BOTOX® is a natural, purified protein.

First, the area will be numbed with an anaesthetic cream prior to injecting. Next, BOTOX® is injected into the upper lip, weakening it so that the elevation of the upper lip is reduced. Dosage is adjusted upon an assessment of your condition. Some individuals require more while others may require lesser to obtain an optimal result.

Follow Up Care

After complete recovery, it is essential to maintain your new smile just like your own natural smile. With a proper oral home care and regular professional maintenance every 6 months, the result of a surgical method of treatment will last for years.

For BOTOX® injections, the effects of each session will last up to 4 months.

What are the Types of Gummy Smile Treatments?

Our periodontists/dental surgeons will recommend and customised the most appropriate procedure for you, based on your dental condition and your needs.

Surgical Methods

  • The result of a surgical method of treatment – crown lengthening surgery – will last for years.
  • Crown lengthening surgery is a procedure which adjusts excessive gum tissue and the underlying bone to expose tooth’s surface more.
  • In certain cases, crown lengthening may be combined with other types of treatment to achieve the ideal proportion of teeth to gums.
  • Crown lengthening takes about one hour to complete and the suture are removed after one week.
  • If crowns are indicated, then there is a waiting period of about 1-3 months before the final crowns are preparated.
  • Where braces and/or jaw surgery is required, the treatment period will take longer, depending on the individual’s dental condition.
  • Proper maintenance and professional follow-up will be essential for successful long term treatment outcome.

Non-Surgical Methods

  • To treat the hyperactive muscle of the upper lip, a non-surgical method via BOTOX® injections can be used.
  • This is a 10-minutes procedure consisting of a few tiny injections.
  • The sensation is akin to an ant bite, and slight bruising at an injection site may occur for some. It will take three days for BOTOX® to begin taking effect and the elevation of the upper lip is progressively weakened. In about seven days, full results where your smile will show less gum will be seen.

This treatment has minimal down-time and improvement is gradual. One can return to normal activities on the day of the treatment.
