Gummy Smile Treatment

Usually, the most common type of grin is where most of the gum is hidden, except for the pink triangles you can see between teeth. On the other hand, a ‘gummy’ smile shows too much gum tissue (3 millimetres of excessive gingival display or more). About 10% of all young adults have gummy smiles.

While every smile is beautiful, we work with our patients to help them achieve the smile they believe is the most appealing. People who have a gummy smile may feel their teeth are smaller than they should be, are hesitant to smile or are self-conscious about their smile.

At Far East Dental, we help patients gain the confidence to smile with our gummy smile treatment options.

CAUSES OF GUMMY SMILE

Do You Have a “Gummy Smile?” | Knoxville Dentist Dr. Jack Haney

Here are several reasons why you might be showing excessive gum tissue:
•A short (hyperactive) upper lip
•An upper lip that moves too much (hypermobile)
•A Vertical Maxillary Excess (VME)
•An extreme overbite
•Teeth that haven’t completely erupted through the bone (Altered Active Eruption)
•Gums that haven’t receded despite advancing age (Altered Passive Eruption)

Because the condition that causes gummy smiles are almost always inherited, there isn’t much you can do to avoid it.

GUMMY SMILE TREATMENT OPTIONS

1- Orthodontic Treatment

Suppose the underlying cause of excessive gingival display is minor and is caused by the jaws or teeth. In that case, it can occasionally be treated with orthodontics alone to correct the bite and make the gums look less conspicuous.

You can alleviate both the pain and discomfort caused by these issues, as well as the aesthetic problem of a gummy grin.

2- Botox Treatment

Botox can be used to treat a gummy grin in a simple and effective manner. The best part about this therapy is that it is non-invasive and takes only a few minutes to complete!

Botox contains botulinum toxin type A, which can relax upper lip muscles and prevent the rise of the upper lip when smiling, allowing the gums to remain hidden.

The results are almost immediate, with your ideal smile arriving within two weeks. However, this treatment is temporary and generally lasts for 3 months.

3-Surgical Procedures

At Far East Dental , we offer surgical procedures for crown lengthening (gingivectomy).

A gingivectomy will reduce the quantity of gum tissue you have to make your natural teeth appear more proportionate. Also known as gum contouring surgery, it is a minimally invasive procedure that helps you feel more confident when you smile.

For severe cases of jaw protrusion, the best course of action is orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) combined with orthodontic treatment. You will be referred to an oral surgeon who will recontour the upper jaw and move it upward into its ideal position before securing it with plates and screws. This is done under general anaesthesia and requires a hospital stay.
