When a tooth is too damaged to support a tooth filling but not damaged enough for a dental crown, dental onlay falls in between dental fillings and crowns. Dental inlays or onlays are the same kind of restoration ,but they cover difference proportions of the tooth. Inlays fill the space in between cusp or round edges, all the center of the tooth surface . The dental onlay works like an inlay but covers one or more cusps or entire biting surface of the tooth. Dental onlays are made of porcelain and one more durable and usually last longer than dental fillings.
Here at Far East Dental ,the specialist prefers doing direct or indirect inlay/onlay:
- Direct onlay often uses composite material as filling procedure
- Indirect onlay by taking the impression of teeth after the cavities are removed and sent to our in house lab ,which takes 2-3 days to fabricate ,a temporary filling will be placed and then removed when the onlay are ready to be connected on the tooth
- Other way , this is our regular onlay procedure by a digital optical impression (no messy molds are used) scanning of the teeth and mouth ,then scanned files connected to in house lab , the process takes only 6 hours-10 hours ( one day restoration) then onlay is cemented on tooth.
Only are more expensive than fillings, but 2/3 the price of crowns . Here at Far East Dental, our specialist will give patient all the options which fit patient‘s budget and time frame.
