Removable Dentures

If you have lost teeth through natural aging or unfortunate injury, dental prostheses can be a great solution. In other words, dental prostheses refer to dentures which are replacements for missing teeth that are custom-made, with the option of being removable. People who have dentures have the ability to take them in and out of their mouth at their own leisure. With modern day state-of-the-art technology, dentures look and feel more realistic than ever before. Although they take some time to get used to, they are almost as similar as real teeth.

THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF DENTURES:

  • Full Dentures
  • Partial Dentures

Each type consists of several options and all have the same capabilities. Both types consist of a base that has a natural gum-color to it and is made out of a plastic resin. This base is placed on, what is left over from, the alveolar bone ridge. The alveolar bone ridge is what teeth are held in by and with dentures, it is where they create a suctioning effect to keep the dentures in place. It is very important that dentures are primarily fitted correctly so that they maintain position while in use. The nerves and ligaments in the mouth will have to be retrained until they can function properly.

Types of Full Dentures

Immediate Dentures: These are the kind of dentures that are used temporarily before permanent dentures. The reason why these are necessary is because once teeth have left the gums, the gums will start to naturally shrink down. Although immediate dentures may not fit the greatest, they are only temporary until you are ready for permanent ones.

Conventional Full Dentures: These are permanent dentures that look and feel like your own natural teeth. They are carefully crafted to look as natural as possible and are long lasting, functioning replacements.

Implant-Supported Overdentures: These are implants that are used to support the upper, and/or lower dentures. They provide better comfort and stability for people who use dentures. Generally, the upper jaw will require more implants than the lower.

Fixed Dentures: These are non-removable kinds of dentures. Implants are used to hold a row of prosthetic teeth. With fixed dentures, people won’t have to worry about them slipping out of their mouth while doing simple things such as eating or talking.

Types of Partial Dentures

Transitional Partial Dentures: These kinds of dentures are typically used after a tooth extraction, worn temporarily for healing. Once the healing is complete, you are ready for permanent implants. They are relatively inexpensive.

Removable Partial Dentures (RPDs): These kinds of dentures are a bit more pricy than conventional dentures, but they are made to last longer. They consist of vitallium which is a well-constructed metal base that is used to make these dentures less uncomfortable and lighter on the gums.
